Counting the Cost
During a recent conversation about the turmoil in Europe, the media’s representation of the U.S. government, and other life events, someone asked me: At what point would moving to England be too costly?
Their question struck me. I had never considered when moving would be too costly. They weren’t trying to be unkind—just practical and serious. I could see them thinking through all the implications this move would have on our family.
This journey has always been a desire of our hearts and a mission the Lord has placed on Kris and me. But in our conversation about school, housing, moving logistics, and Social Security questions, this person was counting the cost.
In Luke, Jesus talks about the cost of being a disciple:
He says the cost is taking up our cross, following Him, and renouncing all that we have. Counting the cost is important—in building a tower, in home renovations, and even in a move to the UK.
There will be countless costs for our family. Right now, we are saying our final goodbyes to some of the most dear people in our lives. The girls have sold or shipped off their favorite toys and belongings. We are holding our schooling plans with open hands, which may mean saying goodbye to our homeschooling journey. We will miss important family events. We are leaving a church community that has been part of our lives for almost a decade. None of these costs are lost on us—we feel them deeply.
In the Gospel of Mark, we see a costly outpouring of love for Jesus. A woman in Bethany anoints Jesus with her expensive perfume. Those around her considered it wasteful. But she counted the cost and saw Jesus as worth her most prized possession. Jesus’ response to her was far different from that of the disciples:
"And truly, I say to you, wherever the gospel is proclaimed in the whole world, what she has done will be told in memory of her.” - Mark 14:9
She was willing to count the cost and pour out what she had on the One she saw as most worthy.
There will be many difficulties ahead of us, and we would love for you to join us in praying over them. But like every disciple of Jesus, we must count the cost of following Him.
Pray as April represents the leap of faith into full employment with the IMB and leaving what we know behind. We cant wait to share the journey with you! Buckle up folks. 🎢
